Stop Smoking for Free!
In October many organisations are giving away free stop smoking packages and some of these organisations will also sell or recommend the use of nicotine gums and patches.
To stop smoking some people start by visiting their doctor, and most doctors will give two options or two methods to stop smoking; prescription nicotine gum and patches or going cold turkey. The purpose of this blog is to analyse these stop smoking methods and to offer some insight. Let’s start off with the nicotine patches and gum.
How Safe is it to Consume Nicotine?
Oh, if there's a doctor or advisor that disputes that nicotine is a lethal neurotoxin, please give me a call. I'd love to meet you! I have a few drops of pure nicotine I've been saving for someone just like you! If you doubt that nicotine is poisonous, or even better, if you've been advising the public that its not a poison, lets test it on you! You don't even need to eat it. We'll just rub it on your skin and see what happens. You might want to watch this old video before you visit me though (Note: I don't endorse the harming of animals in any way. I don't even eat them. Unfortunately the video has been shot and the mouse is dead. Hopefully its death serves as a warning and saves some lives.)
Warning! Graphic and Grossly Unpleasant to Watch!
Why Would a Doctor Prescribe a Poison?
This is just my opinion, but I think it’s because doctors have been sold this method of stopping smoking with clever advertising. Using nicotine patches and nicotine gum is called “nicotine replacement therapy”. If the nicotine has been replaced then there is no danger from the nicotine, right? Wrong!
Think about it; what has the nicotine been replaced with? Well, it hasn't It’s the cigarettes that have been replaced. The gum and the patches are just another nicotine delivery method replacing cigarettes! Calling it nicotine replacement therapy is just a sneaky misdirection of attention. It should be called “cigarette replacement therapy” but that wouldn't sell as well! We are told that nicotine is addictive because it produces dopamine, a hormone associated with feelings of satisfaction. It’s as if the pharmaceutical companies want to cash in on how addictive nicotine is so they put it into gum and patches and sell it as “nicotine replacement therapy”.
Going Cold Turkey.
The trouble is that life does not stop just because you have decided to stop smoking. Life carries on and there so many things that require your undivided attention every day that makes going cold turkey becomes very difficult. Going cold turkey takes tremendous energy too. Every time you shift your focus to some other activity, you have to remember to refocus on being a non-smoker as soon as you have completed this activity.
The first time you attempt this is when you stand the greatest chance of success. But each time you fail, you have taught yourself that all the effort was for nothing, and so mustering more will power for the next time becomes more difficult and takes much more determination and desire.
