If you’re having trouble keeping to your new year’s resolutions the second thing you need to consider before you’ll succeed at changing your habits is consumer science.
Consumer scientists are only afraid of one thing; satisfied customers. There is nothing on earth more frightening, more horrifying to a consumer scientist than a satisfied consumer. Satisfied customers are satisfied and satisfied customers don’t want anything. Satisfied customers stop consuming. Satisfied consumers stop spending money and consumer scientists are paid to get you to part with your money. How have consumer scientists turned prying your money from your hands into a science?
Consumer scientists have learned how to prevent you from feeling satisfied for very long by creating a sense of dissatisfaction inside of you. This perpetual feeling of dissatisfaction is created by having you compare yourself with standards presented to us in the media that are impossible to achieve for long in the real world.
Consumer scientists want you to feel “not good enough” in the hope that they can convince you that once you have their product (and they have your money) you will finally be good enough. You’ll be acceptable. This is an open secret in the advertising industry and I way Seinfeld openly ridicules the industry when he receives a Clio award in the short video below.
Consumer scientists strive to make you feel inadequate so that they can sell you their products. This means that many people are not setting goals that are really important to them, but are important to consumer scientists. Staying focussed on something that isn’t really important to you doesn’t work.
Most people don’t really know what they want for themselves. Most people haven’t sat down and thought about what they really want as opposed to what they should want thanks to consumer science. Most people never consider that feeling empty inside can’t be filled with food or a faster car. Most people are chasing the dream they see on TV or on the covers of glossy magazines without ever considering that the people posing on the magazine covers could never look that good in real life.
In part three we’ll cover some ways to make permanent changes in your life.
