Stop Smoking for Free!
There is no such thing as a free lunch, but there is always free cheese in a mousetrap. I know that there’s always an exception to the rule, but one always needs to apply caution when something is offered for free. Does it apply to stopping smoking for free?
In October many organisations are giving away free stop smoking packages and some of these organisations will also sell or recommend the use of nicotine gums and patches.
To stop smoking some people start by visiting their doctor, and most doctors will give two options or two methods to stop smoking; prescription nicotine gum and patches or going cold turkey. The purpose of this blog is to analyse these stop smoking methods and to offer some insight. Let’s start off with the nicotine patches and gum.
How Safe is it to Consume Nicotine?
Nicotine comes from the tobacco plant. The tobacco plant produces nicotine to discourage insects from eating it. Nicotine is a natural insecticide and it’s a fact that nicotine was originally used as an insecticide and is still used in this way today. Nicotine is a very powerful poison and is more lethal than both arsenic and strychnine. Nicotine is the reason most people decide to stop smoking; they realise its killing them! This is the reason most doctors will recommend that you stop smoking.
Oh, if there's a doctor or advisor that disputes that nicotine is a lethal neurotoxin, please give me a call. I'd love to meet you! I have a few drops of pure nicotine I've been saving for someone just like you! If you doubt that nicotine is poisonous, or even better, if you've been advising the public that its not a poison, lets test it on you! You don't even need to eat it. We'll just rub it on your skin and see what happens. You might want to watch this old video before you visit me though (Note: I don't endorse the harming of animals in any way. I don't even eat them. Unfortunately the video has been shot and the mouse is dead. Hopefully its death serves as a warning and saves some lives.)
Warning! Graphic and Grossly Unpleasant to Watch!
Most people know that nicotine is a poison and yet will still attach a patch that contains nicotine to their skin, or chew gum that contains nicotine, a lethal poison, just because their doctor told them to. Why would intelligent people do this? Of course I’m not suggesting that your doctor wants you dead. If we all died our doctors wouldn’t have any patients and this would be as disastrous to the medical industry as everyone being perfect healthy all the time! I think it’s because we all instinctively trust doctors? If you can’t trust your doctor, who can you trust? If you're a medical practitioner or a dispenser of medicine please re-evaluate your values based on this information.
Why Would a Doctor Prescribe a Poison?
In the original Hippocratic Oath it states “I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect”, but doctors don’t swear the original Hippocratic Oath anymore. But most doctors didn’t become doctors so they could cause harm. Most doctors become doctors because they have a very sincere desire to help people and to make a difference. There can be no doubt that doctors and medicine do make a big difference. So why would they prescribe poison?
This is just my opinion, but I think it’s because doctors have been sold this method of stopping smoking with clever advertising. Using nicotine patches and nicotine gum is called “nicotine replacement therapy”. If the nicotine has been replaced then there is no danger from the nicotine, right? Wrong!
Think about it; what has the nicotine been replaced with? Well, it hasn't It’s the cigarettes that have been replaced. The gum and the patches are just another nicotine delivery method replacing cigarettes! Calling it nicotine replacement therapy is just a sneaky misdirection of attention. It should be called “cigarette replacement therapy” but that wouldn't sell as well! We are told that nicotine is addictive because it produces dopamine, a hormone associated with feelings of satisfaction. It’s as if the pharmaceutical companies want to cash in on how addictive nicotine is so they put it into gum and patches and sell it as “nicotine replacement therapy”.
If this method was so effective why don’t we help cocaine addicts to stop snorting cocaine by just chewing a little cocaine gum and slapping a cocaine patch on? We could call it “cocaine replacement therapy”. Obviously, if it’s the nicotine that we are addicted to, how on earth would it help to just give it to us in a different format? If that was true we’re just creating a new addiction to gum and patches. I wonder though, does the nicotine delivered from a patch or from nicotine gum also produce dopamine in the same way a cigarette does? Have you ever seen someone stick a nicotine patch onto their arm with a look of satisfaction on their face? There is more to this than meets the eye and I’ll enlarge on this concept in Part Two.
Going Cold Turkey.
Will power is a type of mental adrenaline. It is designed for short bursts and most certainly not for the long haul. Will power is a function of the conscious mind, and the conscious mind can only be in one place at a time. We can only focus on one thing at a time with the conscious mind. If you have any doubt at all watch this very short video:
As has been demonstrated, the conscious mind can only focus on one thing at a time. As long as you are focussing on not smoking, and continue to focus on not smoking, you will remain a non smoker. If you can keep this up for long enough it will become a habit and habit’s are second nature so you will no longer need to keep up this intense focus.
The trouble is that life does not stop just because you have decided to stop smoking. Life carries on and there so many things that require your undivided attention every day that makes going cold turkey becomes very difficult. Going cold turkey takes tremendous energy too. Every time you shift your focus to some other activity, you have to remember to refocus on being a non-smoker as soon as you have completed this activity.
The first time you attempt this is when you stand the greatest chance of success. But each time you fail, you have taught yourself that all the effort was for nothing, and so mustering more will power for the next time becomes more difficult and takes much more determination and desire.
Where to From Here?
For those people that seriously want to stop smoking, it should be obvious that we are not being given the whole truth as to what smoking really is and how best to stop. Companies have a vested interest in selling you their products and nicotine is product even though it’s a lethal poison. Maybe it’s time to discover the true reason people it difficult to stop smoking.
In Part Two of this blog we will explore the real reason people smoke. If you found this article informative or if you think this article could help someone, please share.
